The 5th column is a well known phrase meaning 'a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group such as a nation from within' and has its origins in the Spanish Civil war, when four columns of Franco troops marching towards Madrid where assisted by others from within the city. These where later called the "fifth column" in a radio address.
