About Me
Aloha All,,
I was born and raised on a cattle ranch
in northern California, so "Cowboy's",
are near and dear to my heart. For me,
the "Greatest" movie-land cowboy, of all
time, is James Arness.
He was maybe the greatest, all time
natural horseman, to ever "set" a horse
on film.
The way James "sat" a horse, was
majestic, he was never out of the saddle,
not for a second. He always kept the horse
right under him, he was just a "Natural-
Born-Horsemen.
I am sure that Jim has "hit" the ground
more than once, all great cowboys have, but
it was never caught on film.
Not, that I am some kind of "super"
horseman-ship judge, that I am not. In fact,
I am kind of a "third- stirrup" rider myself,
always a little "out" of the saddle, always
looking for "center".
James Arness, was not born on a ranch, and
"mastered" most of his natural horseman-ship
skills, in less than ninety days. That is the
amount of time Jim had, to hone his gun
handling, and riding skills, before shooting
started on the first episode of Gunsmoke.
I am sure that Jim's natural athletic ability,
played a key role. James was a world class
surfer, a great snow skier, and an out standing
pilot. All signs, of some great "God-Given"
natural ability.
Natural ability, along with being a very brave,
and courageous human being. Just a national
treasure, kinda like Mt Rushmore, or the Grand
Canyon, just bigger than life., a real
American Hero.
Will Rogers was good, the Duke was OK, Roy
was fair, but James Arness, in my opinion,
was one of the best natural horsemen, to ever
be caught on film. Some people thought Jim
might be to tall, to be a good cowboy. But in
reality, Jim has the perfect "cowboy build",
all legs, and no body.
His "timing", was impeccable. It was Orson
Well's, perfect. He was a natural born
actor.
Now, he did start out on what might of been,
the greatest movie horse of all time, "Old
Buck".
One of the greatest movie horse's of all time,
coupled with a great actor, a great cast, and
great writers, it made for the "Greatest" TV
Western Series of all time.
The series hit at precisely the right moment
in history, much like Elvis. James came along
at precisely the right time, and had perfect
timing, to become a super star. Two, very
talented men, hit TV, at about the same time
in history, and both became super-stars.
