Z Cars (UK) tv show photo

Z-Cars or Zed Cars (yes, definitely Zed and not Zee) was a police drama which ran through the Sixties and Seventies. A Z-Car was codename for a crime patrol vehicle. It was based in fictional Newtown which was remarkably like Kirkby, Liverpool with accents that matched that area of England. First really gritty depiction of police work in the UK.

In the early days the show was transmitted live, with only pre-shot film inserts to relieve the pressure for cast and crew. Mindful of the 14 million viewers about to tune in, Stratford Johns' nerves would regularly see him vomit before going into studio.
