Focus is on a women's prison, HMP Stone Park this show was mainly about the prison staff (not the inmates). Well-groomed, genteel governor Faye Boswell (Googie Withers) tries to liberalise the prison regime. Her Chief Officer was Mrs. Armitage (Mona Bruce). In season 4 Boswell was replaced as Governor by Helen Forrester (Katharine Blake) and then in season 5 by Susan Marshall (Sarah Lawson).

Series Fun Facts
- There is currently no known copy of "Within These Walls" (1974) {Nowhere for the Kids (#2.3)} in existence. This is consequently the only missing episode of the entire run.
- Ironically, the only audience unable to watch the series were real-life prison inmates: the programme aired at 9pm but the prisoners were locked in their cells half-an-hour earlier.
- The series revolved around HMP Stone Park. Over the course of the series the prison had three Governors: Faye Boswell, Helen Forrester and Susan Marshall.
