Voltron: Defender of the Universe
- There were a total of three "Voltrons": Voltron I of the Near Universe was the "Vehicle Force", and the "Lion Force" of the Far Universe was Voltron III. Voltron II, from the Middle Universe, featured three humanoid robots that combined into one multi-armed fighter; this version was never shown in the US (though toys based on this show were released).
- The first season of Voltron was not a straight dub from the Japanese anime series "Hyakujû-ô Goraion" (1981) (neither was the second from "Kikô Kantai dairugger XV" (1982)) due to American broadcast standards - "living" beings were never killed on-screen; mechanical creatures, however, were fair game. One of the most noticeable differences involves the character Sven. In the Japanese version, this character died after battling the enemy's witch after six appearances. In the American version, he was seriously injured and left to heal, and returns near the end of the season. In the Japanese version, this was his brother at the end of the series. The third season (second season for the Lion Voltron Force) was created specifically for the American audience.
- Pidge, who was a member of the Lion Voltron Force, had a brother named Chip, who was part of the Vehicle Voltron Force. However, the two Japanese inspirations for the show, "Hyakujû-ô Goraion" (1981) and "Kikô Kantai dairugger XV" (1982) are not related, up to and including these characters. This is also why the antagonists in both series were known as belonging to one race, the Drules, in the American version; while "Kikô Kantai dairugger XV encountered them only after they began a planet search, the Vehicle Voltron Force were always watching out for them (and the Far Universe inhabitants were mentioned as being a part of their empire in the first season).
- The only time the group of main characters from the Galaxy Alliance was referred to as the Air Unit (this may be in connection with the other Voltron Force having an Air Team along with Sea and Land Teams. Keith also refers to himself as the Air Unit Leader instead of the Commander).
- The images of the destroyed planet in the GoLion pilot "Escape from Slave Castle" this was based upon were not Arus but from a flashback-sequence of a post-nuclear-war Earth in 1999. Also, the one who split Voltron into five pieces was not the witch in disguise but an actual deity responding to a lofty challenge from him. Deleted footage included prisoners' being tortured to death.
- The only time the Far Universe location was called the Diamond Galaxy instead of the Dinubian Galaxy. (They may mean the same thing since "Dinubian" is similar to the words from which "diamond" is derived.
- In addition to several shots of a feast scene originally from the beginning/middle of the plot of the GoLions episode "Death of Shirogane the Hero" being moved to the end to replace a death and funeral scene, the shots of the salute, a Castle view, and the bird flying by a sunset that were to happen after this were saved but put in a different spot. Deleted scenes included an opening shot of the Castle and candy being given to a child.
- A deleted scene from the GoLions episode "The Beautiful Princess' Battle" this was based on included a face-slap.
- A deleted scene from the GoLion episode "Girl of the Land of Evil" this was based on showed the victim's sister committing suicide by jumping off a cliff.
- The title was a literal translation of the Japanese (the only one to be so).
- The first time that the Voltron Force are actually shown entering a circular room with their usual garments after riding rails down, showing that they likely enter the five doors within to don uniforms and again travel on similar devices to the Lions.
- The first time the shots of the Voltron Force entering the elevators wasn't in numerical order (Pidge was shown entering 3 after Lance and Allura had entered 2 and 4. Also, when they entered the chamber as a group just before being transported to the Lions, Keith arrived a moment after everyone else so must have boarded 1 last.)
- A scene during the battle between Voltron and Yorak involving injury was omitted - when about to be struck by the Blazing Sword, Yorak has been attacked in the limbs but not the stomach, yet sports a hole there from some wound, inflicted apparently without being seen, as the Sword is being formed.
- The first time the group says their catchphrase "Let's go, Voltron Force".
- A deleted scene from the GoLion episode "Challenge from Space" this was based on showed the transformed prince shot by his benefactor as a result of the stalemate, with his transformation back into his human self confirming the death, and his father being killed when attempting to avenge him. (The king's absence after the fight was noted by the princess in "It'll Be a Cold Day" as insanity resulting from it).
- The decimated planet in the "GoLion" episode "Goodbye, Earth" this was based on was Earth - also the war-destroyed world shown in the pilot where the quintet of space-explorers was captured, rather than Arus. Also, the shooting was not a military salute but an aim to kill for desertion.
- The first time Hunk used the nickname Chief on Keith. "Chief" was his GoLion counterpart's nickname.
- In the GoLion episode "Phantom Space Flowers" this was based upon, the plants actually caused death rather than a prolonged sickness (the one deleted scene that would have made this harder to refute was of one victim falling over his balcony railing when collapsing).
- The only time Voltron's lips move to form words (Keith's).
- The first time an antagonist called or even mentioned a member of the Voltron Force by name (except Allura - they knew of her before her joining).
- The drink the guards could be overheard discussing in the GoLions episode "Destroy the Girant Canon!" this was based upon was not an alien concocted beverage but straight alcohol.
- The only time Zarkon's home was referred to as the Planet of Doom rather than Planet Doom (as "Mousemania" reveals, this may be the world's nickname only).
- The only episode, excepting the first three, where Voltron was not formed and the only time other than "A Ghost and Four Keys" not all the Lions appeared (in the first two they appeared in recounts of what happened to Voltron).
- The woman often appearing as a parallel to Allura in Lotor's dreams is explained in the GoLion episode "The Imperial Prince's Dark Love" this was based upon as being the antagonist's late mother, who was murdered by his unmarried father.
- A deleted scene from the GoLion episode "Mortal Combat of Light and Shadow" this was based upon revealed the enemy's two guards challenged to fight him as black-clad, luminous-eyed humans rather than robots since they spurted blood when destroyed.
- Deleted scenes from the GoLion episode "GoLion Hunting" this was based on included several bloody murders of civilians and, later, the similar deaths of the dwarfish human attackers during their encounter with the Black Lion.
- The first time Planet Doom was shown from space.
- In the GoLions episode "No Tomorrow for Altea" this was based upon, the angel-like being was the same deity who divided Voltron into the Lions in the show's pilot (as opposed to the witch merely masking as one).
- A deleted scene from the GoLions episode "The Seven Free Planets" this was based on included a chest-wound during the duel.
- The only time a uniform was flown in by someone other than its main owner (except for the disguise trick in "Surrender"; the black uniform had been originally given to Sven, but Garrett was the one wearing it).
