Goof (plot holes): During the history class when they are talking about he Battle of Willow Creek the blackboard says the battle was in 1865, but throughout the rest of the show it is always said that it happened in 1864.
Goof (continuity error): Elena's front door has glass panel's in it, in every subsequent episode there are no glass panel's in her front door. This is because the pilot was filmed in Vancouver, whereas the rest of the show was filmed in Georgia.
Goof (continuity error): The Salvatore boarding house looks completely different from what it does in the rest of the series. This is because the pilot was filmed in Vancouver, whereas the rest of the show was filmed in Georgia.
Goof (continuity error): When Elena gets the serving spoons out of the drawer for dinner, she takes out two wooden utensils. However, when Bonnie takes them from her, there is only one spoon, and it is made of metal.
Goof (continuity error): When Elena is eating dinner with Bonnie and Stefan, she is wearing a long necklace. When the camera cuts to Elena at one point, the necklace is tighter against her neck like a choker. Later, when the camera cuts back to her again, the necklace is loose around her neck.
Goof (revealing mistake): The set for Jeremy's room has a crokinole board placed on the wall, like a dart board. Crokinole is a game that must be played on a flat, horizontal surface, and the boards are usually heavy as they're made of wood, so hanging a board on the wall is sort of ludicrous.
Goof (continuity error): In the scene where Caroline scares away the crow with a pillow she goes from wearing a grey skirt to being in her undershorts, though there's no time for her to have changed in between shots.
Goof (revealing mistake): When Bonnie sets the car on fire, the first couple of shots of "Bonnie's" back are obviously a stand-in and not Kat Graham. The stand in has much wider shoulders, is much more muscular, has longer and more curly hair, and does not have the birth mark that Kat Graham has on her back in later shots.
Goof (continuity error): When Elena wakes up and reaches for her diary, one shot shows her vervain necklace hidden under her hair on her right, but the next shot shows the necklace in the middle of her chest. The next few shots alternatively show the necklace in the two positions.
Goof (continuity error): When Damon Salvatore chases Caroline Forbes up the basement stairs after she lets him out of the cell, there is a bright light shining at the bottom of the steps even though the basement was dark in the previous scenes.
Goof (revealing mistake): In the state of Virginia (where Mystics Falls is said to be) if you are under the age of 21, all IDs are supposed to be vertical. However, when Sheriff Forbes looks in Viki's purse her ID is horizontal.
Goof (plot holes): In all the other times that either Damon or Stephn have been cut, the wound healed almost instantly. However when Damon pierced his own skin to force Vicky to feed, the wound stayed open for the entire time she was drinking from it.
Goof (anachronisms): Near the beginning of the episode Sheriff Forbes finds Vicki Donovan's driver's license and holds it up. You can't see the date of birth but you can see that the license was issued in the year 2000. This would have been impossible for Vicki, who is only supposed to be 17/18 in 2009. She would have been 8 or 9 in 2000.
Goof (continuity error): In the flashback scene where Katherine asks Damon and Stefan to take her to the Founder's Ball, Damon uses his left hand to remove his hat as he bows down. In the next shot, Damon puts his hat back using his right hand.
Goof (continuity error): When Damon and Vicki and partying in the Salvatore boarding house, Damon often paces through patches of sunlight yet does not burn or seem hurt despite the fact that he does not have his ring.
Goof (continuity error): When Stefan is standing outside the police station, the police car he's standing by has the number 162 on it. However, after everyone comes out of the station, the car's number changes to 134.
Goof (plot holes): Logan, the newly turned vampire, claims he cannot get in his own house because he got no one to let him in as Logan lives alone. But if no one human lives in a house vampires can get in without being invited in as it was implied in the situation with Damon killing Ms. Gibbons to get into the tomb vampires' lair.
Goof (continuity error): When Damon picks Elena up after she faints it shows her arms slung around him, when the camera angle changes her arms aren't wrapped around him any more, they are hanging down instead.
Goof (continuity error): When Damon is eating a burger at Bree's bar and talking to Elena about Katherine, his beer bottle alternates from his hand to sitting on the table as the camera angle changes.
Goof (anachronisms): During one of the 1864 flashbacks, a copy of Renoir's "Two Young Girls at the Piano" can be seen on the wall behind Katherine. This painting was painted in 1892.
Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): After Damon forces Elena to drink his blood the amount and position of the trickle of blood beside her mouth and on her chin changes between shots. The amount of blood seems to change but actually stays the same, the different camera angles show more and less blood throughout the scene. On the close-ups of Elana and Damon there is a small amount of blood running from her mouth, when the camera panes out you can see a larger amount of blood under her chin. When the camera is back to a close-up you cannot see under her chin, giving the illusion that the amount of blood is growing and shrinking in size.
Goof (plot holes): When Damon gives Elena her necklace back he picks it up by the pendant but the pendant is filled with vervain so he should have been burned when he touched it.
Goof (continuity error): When Damon comes out of the bathroom and starts getting ready for the bachelor auction, he's not wearing his lapis lazuli ring.
Goof (continuity error): When Elena pulls the stake out of Harper's leg for Stefan, when they are rescuing Stefan, Stefan's hands are still tied and the rope is trailing over his shoulder, then Damon tells them to hurry up and they are leaving the room and Stefan's hands are untied and the rope nowhere to be seen.
Goof (continuity error): A branch falls on Elena's car when she's waiting for the others to return. When Alaric goes back to the car, there's no branch on it.
Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Alaric Saltzman mentions that he has a friend who studied Criminology at Duke, but there are no criminology courses offered at Duke University.
Goof (continuity error): in the restaurant when Isobel and Elena meet, Isobel is leaving and we see a boy passing behind Elena. Then Bonnie arrives and we see the same boy passing behind Elena again.
Goof (continuity error): When Stefan is telling Elena about John Gilbert being her father, the flower hair clip in her hair keeps disappearing and reappearing throughout the scene.
Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Stefan says Mason only has superhuman abilities during the full moon. However, at the carnival Stefan learned that Mason has superhuman strength even without a full moon when they arm wrestled, and Damon witnessed Mason's superhuman strength and agility when Mason fought a carny.
Goof (continuity error): When Caroline is sitting down in the dungeon on the Lockwood Estate and has blood on her mouth, the blood changes its consistency.
