In the original pilot, C.J. was Curtis and Ella's son. This was later changed to C.J. as Curtis and Ella's nephew and the addition of Calvin as their son.
When Malik sees a white man in his house, he says, "Oh, my gosh, are we being audited?" This is an exact duplicate of the same scenario and line used in the film "Guess Who (2005)," which had been released the year before.
