• When Eric tries to claim that he has been framed with the charge of selling vampire blood, the Magister shows that he (rightly) disbelieves Eric by giving a sarcastic list of other excuses he has heard in the past: "You've got the wrong man. My dog ate my homework. I saw Goody Osbourne with the devil." The last one is a direct quote from Arthur Miller's 1953 play 'The Crucible', which in turn was based on records from the real-life Salem witchcraft trials in what is now Massachusetts during 1692 and 1693. The inclusion of this line implies that the Magister was present at the original witch trials.
• When Chip runs into Jessica, he says that he and his group stopped at Merlotte's on the way back from protesting at an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. On January 29, 1998, an abortion clinic in Birmingham was bombed by Eric Robert Rudolph (also responsible for the bombings at the Centennial Olympic Park and the Otherside Lounge lesbian bar, both in Atlanta). The Birmingham clinic bombing killed a security guard and severely wounded a nurse, both of whom worked there. Rudolph became a fugitive and a folk hero before being arrested in 2003 and sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole, which, as of 2010, he is serving in the ADX Florence "Supermax" federal prison.
