Dr Anne Coburn, a neurologist who ends up embroiled in this investigation because of a patient she's treating - Alison Willis who has locked-in syndrome
Anne is very much an 'everywoman'; she's your classic career woman who's worked incredibly hard to get where she is, but perhaps at the expense of the rest of her life. She has an adolescent daughter who I think she has a good relationship with - but it's like lots of mother/daughter relationships, intense and troubled at times. Her daughter gets into some trouble and so Anne becomes doubly concerned
