Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Mulder is seen exhaling smoke.
  • Goof (anachronisms): The record player 'DUAL 1214' in the 1952 sequence was not produced before the late 1960s.
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Mulder has a wedding ring on.

Trivia

  • We find the origin of what makes a case an X-file. Unsolved cases were filed under "U" until too many were in there, so they started putting them under "X". A case is given an "X" by the director's office.
  • Mulder is seen to be wearing a wedding ring in this episode. The appearance of this significant piece of jewelry is never explained in the context of the show. It is thought to be a joke in reference to David Duchovny's marriage to Téa Leoni which happened in close proximity to filming of the episode.
  • One of the few episodes Gillian Anderson didn't appear in. Others include were season 2's '3', season 4's 'Zero Sum' and season 5's 'Unusual Suspects'.
  • In this episode Mulder appears, to some extent, to be mimicking 'The Smoking Man'. In the first place his hair is in the same style as that character's. Secondly, his usual coat is replaced with a waterproof affair, similar to TSM's. Lastly and perhaps most significantly, there is a brief shot of Mulder smoking a cigarette. There may be some significance in this, considering the relationship between the two characters. However, it was possibly merely done in the name of quirkiness.
