Episode Quotes

Mulder: I think you'd better get up here.
Scully: What happened?
Mulder: It appears that cockroaches are mortally attacking people.
Scully: I'm not going to ask you if you just said what I think you just said, because I know it's what you just said.
Dr. Jeff Eckerle: How do I know you're not a cockroach?
Mulder: I assure you I'm as human as you are, if not more so.
Scully: Smart is Sexy. [Mulder gives her a look] Look at it this way, Mulder, by the time there's another invasion of artificially intelligent, dung-eating, robotic probes from outer space, maybe their über-children will have devised a way to save our planet.
Mulder: You know, I never thought I'd say this to you, Scully, but you smell bad.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Scully tells Mulder that "...the flush toilet was invented by a man named Thomas Crapper..." This is an urban legend that has a ring of truth. There was a man tamed Thomas Crapper (1836 - 1910), and he was a plumber who founded Thomas Crapper & Co. He made a number of useful improvements to already existing flush toilets which did much to increase their popularity. However, the invention of the flush toilet itself dates back to 1596 and the first British patent was granted in 1778. Another urban legend is that the words "crap" and "crapper" (the latter meaning toilet) derive from Thomas' last name, but both words were in use before he went into business.
  • Goof (factual errors): The cockroach seen at the end on Mulder's plate is a Giant South American Cockroach, which isn't even native to the U.S. or Canada.
  • Goof (factual errors): The Sheriff states that "Killer bees are a government experiment gone awry," implying that the US government was involved in transporting African bees to the Western Hemisphere. It was the Brazilian government that did this as early as the 1950s; the African bees escaped captivity, bred with native bees, and it's their descendants that have migrated North from there.

Trivia

  • The plot is about swarming cockroaches. At the 31:35 mark in the episode a cockroach crawls quickly over the actors faces as if to be on the viewers television screen.
  • Coprophagia is the consumption of feces.
  • Sheriff Frass mentions to Mulder that there is a nearby government facility that is rumored to be harvesting swarms of killer bees. This foreshadows one of the brief elements of The X-Files: Fight the Future.
  • The character Dr. Bambi Berenbaum is named after the prize-winning University of Illinois entomologist Dr. May Berenbaum.
