• DATE: After the opening scene, Artemus Gordon refers to the mock hanging that opens the story as "...the Danny Deever thing". Since West & Gordon are working under the direct authority of President Ulysses Grant, the events of the series take place during that presidency, between the years 1869 - 1877. "Danny Deever" is the title of a ballad-style poem written by Rudyard Kipling in 1890 and published on 2 February of that year. It consists of the comments made by Danny Deever's regiment as they are assembled to witness his execution by hanging. The poem is considered to have been inspired by an actual execution, that of a Private Flaxman, taking place in 1887; it has been set to music a number of times. However, the poem, and, therefore, the reference Gordon makes would not exist for anywhere from 13 to 21 years in his future.
