Summary: Needing to earn some money to help pay for his education, John Boy takes on a job reading to Ruth a young woman who recently became blind. However, not long after, John Boy finds that Ruth is sabotaging his attempts of drawing her out of her shell. He then gives her a piece of his mind when Ruth rejects a present that Mary Ellen spent a lot of time making, causing her to realize what she has been doing to all the people in her life. Then, when Ruth and her mother go to the mountain to apologize, they get invited to a picnic and Ruth ultimately attempts to save Elizabeth when she falls into a nearby pond.

Some jobs were opening up and there was an urgency in the country to get up and get going again. There was a restless feeling to life, we all felt it, and my father was no exception. The fall of that year brought him the first real discontent we ever knew him to have.
