Summary: When an annual cross-country race approaches, and John Boy becomes somewhat disappointed to find out that a friend will be racing a thoroughbred, mainly because he was planning on racing his mule Blue. Once he starts to train the mule, the rest of the family enthusiastically help him out and Grandpa gives him some tips on what to do in the race. Not only does John Boy and Blue beat his friend and the thoroughbred, they win the race.
