Charged with leading a small, dedicated team, Detective Inspector Pat Chappel struggles to keep his home life separate from the tough world in which he works. Working at the seedy side of life takes its toll on the team (Sgt. Joe Robinson, PC Cheryl Hutchins, PC Dougie Raymond and new recruit PC Kirsty Morgan, many of whom do not make it intact to the end of the show's run.
