Episode Quotes

Bart Simpson: Dad, start digging some nerd holes!
Lisa Simpson: It's bad enough they put their retainers in the dishwasher; can't we do something?
Homer Simpson: Look, I'm sure we can work something out where we can all live in harmony, right, Marge?
Marge Simpson: No, I want those geeks outta my house!
Marge Simpson: Homey, here the responses from the colleges you applied to.
Homer Simpson: D'oh! D'oh! D'oh! Whoo-hoo! A flyer for a hardware store! D'oh!
Homer: Dean, I'm really sorry about the running-you-over prank.
Dean Peterson: Prank?
Homer: And all those other pranks were my idea, too. *I'm* the one who should be expelled.
Dean Peterson: Well, I'm touched by your honesty. And, who knows, perhaps I've been a bit of an ogre myself.
Homer: Yes you have.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Mr. Burns gets Homer into college, Homer says "I won't be needing my high school diploma anymore!" But Homer has a GED, not a high school diploma (and the document he sets fire to even clearly has GED written on it.)

Trivia

  • 'Conan OBrien, who wrote this episode, said that he based Homer's three nerdy tutors on a trio of nerds who lived in his dorm when he was at Harvard. He said he remembered that they would drop phone books on the floor at night so that girls who lived on the floor below would come up to complain wearing their nightgowns.
  • When Homer is in class, and the professor says that there will be an exam, he screams "this is like a nightmare", and realizes he is not dressed. This is a reference to what many call "The test dream", in which a person is about to take an exam, but he's naked. The dream is an indicator that the person is not ready to face whatever challenge he might have.
  • Dan Castellaneta inadvertently misspelled "smart" as "S-M-R-T" when Homer sang "I am so smart", and ad-libbed "I mean S-M-A-R-T". The writers found this much funnier and used the take.
  • Both this episode, and the one that followed it, ("The Simpsons" (1989) {Rosebud (#5.4)}), feature a scene with Mr. Burns weakly attempting, and failing, to administer a beating to someone.
