Summary: Bart cheats on his intelligence test and is mistaken for a child genius. In order to offer him more stimulation, Marge and Homer enroll him in a school for gifted students where he is immediately made to feel like the mediocre student he is. Bart eventually bluffs his way back into Springfield Elementary by claiming he'll study his classmates but winds up confessing to everyone that he cheated.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FACT: In the Scrabble game at the beginning, Marge plays HI and says that this scores two points. In fact, H is a four-point tile, so HI would score at least five points.
CONT: The Scrabble board keeps changing.
CONT: The whole family goes to the opera to see "Carmen". They have balcony seats and the stage is to their left, yet later on you can see them looking to their right.

TRIVIA

Although this episode aired after ‘Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire’, it was written prior. This is why Santa's Little Helper does not appear.
Bart's Sentence: I will not waste chalk.
This episode was considered the first official episode of the Simpsons, and FOX advertised it as such. The Christmas episode was considered as a special.
On the DVD commentary from this episode Jon Vitti says that the writers were worried about how stupid Homer's hand writing made him look but now it's not sure if he knows the whole alphabet.
Marcia Wallace, making her first appearance on the show, is credited in this episode as "Marsha Wallace" for the only time. The credits sequence in the DVD release of this episode uses the correct spelling of "Marcia"; it is not known whether this edit was made for the DVD or took place at some point between network showings.
