The League of Gentlemen (UK)
- The show is set in the town of Royston Vasey. This is also the real name of 'Roy 'Chubby Brown, who plays Mayor Vaughn on the show.
- The surveyor team in the second episode are named after Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, the assassins in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.
- While saying her marriage vows, Barbara gets David's first names the wrong way around (she says "Charles David" instead of "David Charles"). This is a reference to Lady Diana Spencer getting Prince Charles' names wrong during their real-life wedding (Diana said "Philip Charles Arthur George" instead of "Charles Philip Arthur George").
- The title of the show in Korea is "Psycho Village".
- Tubbs and Edward were based on a real incident which occurred when the cast visited a small shop. The woman behind the counter acted scared, like they were about to rob her.
- The Dentons are loosely based on real relatives of Jeremy Dyson, who went to stay with his relatives who told him to make himself at home, but found himself breaking lots of rules that he didn't know existed.
- Papa Lazarou is inspired by a landlord, of the same name, that the writers had when they were sharing a flat, who would frequently phone them up and ask to speak to Steve Pemberton. He would continue saying "Hello, Steve," "Is Steve there?". The League soon changed the name to Dave.
- Most of the characters are inspired by real people that the gents have encountered.
- Ross's apartment is based on Patrick Bateman's from American Psycho.
- In the original BBC Radio 4 series, the name of the town was "Spent", most of the sketches were spread across the first two television series and there were unique answerphone messages from a Papa Lazarou-like character.
- The incompetent vet Dr Chinnery is based on Tristan Farnon from All Creatures Great and Small (UK), as played by Doctor Who (UK) (1963) star Peter Davison. The character is named after Dennis Chinnery who guest starred in Doctor Who (UK) (1963) on several occasions
- The character of Pauline is based on a restart officer that Reece Shearsmith had.
- Reece Shearsmith's wannabe magician character Dean Tavalouris is named after the esteemed 'Godfather' production designer Dean Tavoularis.
- There is at least one horror movie spoof or reference to in every episode.
- Tom Head, former drummer with The Fall, is often to be seen as one of Pauline's job seekers.
- In Harvey Denton's monologue, he says that people used to call him 'Harvey Toad-Face' - a reference to Batman villain Harvey Two-Face.
- The song that Pop sings in the episode "Lust for Royston Vasey" (2.2) is "Bright Eyes" from Watership Down
- Alan Titchmarsh was to appear but dropped out because of illness.
- The fruit machine that Stella is playing is the classic 'Tuppenny nudger' that, even if it had not payed out in weeks, would still only pay a maximum jackpot of two pounds.
- The crash was filmed in Todmorden where the killer Harold Shipman had a GP practice (1974-1975).
