The Ed Sullivan Show tv show photo

Ed Sullivan's show was straight out of old vaudeville; brief acts of every description, from slapstick comedy to operatic arias. The Muppets' first TV appearance was on Ed Sullivan. Stiff and expressionless, with a peculiar voice and a talent for mispronunciation, Sullivan was at least as recognizable as Cronkite to early 60's viewers.

Cancelled in 1971 by CBS. The decision was a controversial one, since it was made at the end of the 1970-71 season and did not give Sullivan the opportunity to mount a farewell show after more than 20 years on the air. Sullivan would return for a few specials over the next year, however. The Canadian comedy duo of Johnny Wayne & Frank Shuster appeared on the show more often than any other act - nearly 80 appearances.

The historic initial appearance of The Beatles in 1964 began with Ed Sullivan reading a good-luck telegram from Elvis Presley. (Later, it turned out that his manager "Colonel" Tom Parker (XI) had sent the telegram as a publicity move, and Elvis knew nothing about it.) Also appearing on that night's program was another young English performer making his American TV debut, Davy Jones, at the time playing the Artful Dodger in "Oliver!" on Broadway (before he became a pop star with The Monkees), and American actor/impressionist Frank Gorshin, best remembered as The Riddler from Batman. Also making their debut that night were the husband & wife comedy team Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall, who had the thankless task of performing immediately after The Beatles. Brill & McCall said that this hurt their career.
