Creator Deborah Joy LeVine originally wanted to make one of the regular characters a lesbian cop but the network refused.
The show is about women police officers in San Francisco. In real life, many locker rooms for women cops were converted men's rooms. Many cops put plants in the old toilets and urinals because the fixtures were never removed. In the first season of the show, the locker room for the women was a converted men's room that featured plants in a old urinal stall.
When actor Scott Plank, who had a recurring role on the series died in a car accident, the producers decided not to recast his role and did an episode dealing with his character's death. The episode became a tribute to the actor.
After airing an episode called "Testimonial" (episode 3.5) that featured actual sexual abuse survivors telling their stories on camera, calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline surged 75 percent.
Three series regulars became pregnant during the run of the show. The pregnancies of Lisa Vidal and Lela Rochon were hidden but the pregnancy of Nancy McKeon was portrayed.
On the B.S Report podcast (02/04/09) on ESPN.com, Jon Hamm referred to the show as "Five Vaginas and a Dick".
