- Bob Newhart did not enjoy doing this series and wanted to quit halfway through the season. But his agent explained to him that he could not quit because he was under contract.
- NBC wanted to fire Dan Sorkin but Newhart refused. Newhart felt indebted to Sorkin because it was Sorkin who recommended Newhart to Warner Brothers Records which launched his comedy career.
