In an interview with "The A.V. Club", Adam Scott said that his contract for this show went very specifically into what kind of and how much nudity he would have to show. He also said that while they were negotiating the contract, the show-runners wanted him to agree to full-frontal nudity, but when he balked at that, they created a prosthetic penis that he had to wear and his character's wife (played by 'Sonya Walger') had to handle. It was rigged to "ejaculate" by having a prop man hiding behind a couch to pump hair conditioner through it.
The series was renewed for a second season but creator Cynthia Mort decided not to continue to the series. She felt that she was not able to create enough stories for a second season.
The show was originally called "Sex Life". It was still called Sex Life after the pilot. At some point between filming and the actual airing on HBO, the show's named was changed to "Tell Me You Love Me."
When Katie and Dave are in the waiting room before their session, we see the names of the therapists working there. The name on the tag next to Dr May Foster's is Dr Cynthia Mort, creator/writer of the show, and next to it we see Dr Pat Rozema (Patricia Rozema), who directed episodes of the show.
