Summary: Stardate: Unknown A displaced race of spacefarers, known as the Voth, discovers the remains of a human left on a planet. The remains, that of Ensign Hogan ("Basics, Part II"), contain genetic markers that match the spacefaring race in such a way that the two races can be considered distant relations. The scientists who find Hogan's remains try to convince the elder of their link to humans, but the elder accuses them of heresy. Before they are brought on trial, the scientists leave in their vessel to search for the link to their past that appears to be aboard a ship called Voyager.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CHAR: When The Doctor is describing the dinosaur species on the Holodeck, his delivery is slow as if he's reading this information off cue cards.
FACT: Veer analyzes the marking on the uniform insignia and deduces that not only is it the name of a vessel, but also the correct pronunciation. However, there was no context to lead him to conclude the nature of the marks, or, assuming they did correspond to a language, whether each symbol represented a sound (as in English) a syllable (as in Amharic) or a word (as in Chinese). The same error was made in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), in which the alien probe deduced the pronunciation and meaning of the Earth probe Voyager on the basis of four letters.

TRIVIA

Names: "Gegen" is also the German word for "against", a suitable name for a heretic. "Veer" sounds like "vir", the Latin word for "man".
SPOILER: The U.S.S Voyager and her crew are not seen until 14 minutes into the episode.
This episode is unusual in that its told from the viewpoint of a guest character, rather then one of the Voyager crew. They don't even appear until well into the second act.
