Summary: Tuvok’s recent unexplained bout of flashbacks appears to coincide with Voyager’s passing of a nearby nebula rich in sirillium. Unfortunatley, flashbacks are known to destroy brain tissue in Vulcans, leading to death. While there is nothing the doctor can do, a mind meld can help Tuvok to find where the flashback is coming from and stop it. Janeway agrees to help Tuvok, and their meld takes them back in time 80 years when Tuvok had served aboard the USS Excelsior, then being captained by Hikaru Sulu.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: Tuvok repeatedly states that the explosion of the Klingon moon took place three days before the final battle scene. However, in the movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), the explosion of the moon is stated to have taken place two months before the next scene in the film.
CONT: SPOILER: Excelsior crew member Dimitri Valtane dies before the ship reaches Khitomer, while in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) he can be seen standing on the bridge at that destination safe and sound.
CHAR: Lieutenant Tuvok says "I felt an obligation to fulfill it." A Vulcan would not *feel* an obligation.

TRIVIA

The bridge of the USS Excelsior (originally seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)) was recreated. It was later re-used as a number of starship bridges, such as the USS Righteous in the Star Trek: Borg (1996) (VG) computer game.
This episode, which reunited original series cast members George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney, was meant to serve as a back-door pilot for a series involving the adventures of Sulu and Rand aboard the U.S.S. Excelsior. Production was scrapped, however when Paramount decided to produce 'Star Trek: Enterprise (2001)' instead.
