MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: As in many other cases, use of the universal translator creates a major hole in the plot. The translator doesn't give the user the ability to speak the language in question; it merely takes the spoken word and translates it into the recipient's language. Thus, when Counselor Troi speaks to the Romulans, they should experience the same effect as we do watching a dubbed movie; the words should be understandable, but the mouth movements shouldn't match. Normally, it isn't an issue, but since Troi is trying to pass as a Romulan, that alone should give her away.
CHAR: When Ensign DeSeve talks to Picard, he erroneously calls him Commander. However, when earlier he talked to Riker, he said "Captain Picard", so he was aware of the promotion.

TRIVIA

Originally, Dr Crusher was the kidnapped crew member, but the staff thought Troi's empathic powers were more suited to an espionage plot.
This is the second time Carolyn Seymour (vq) has played a Romulan in this series. But she plays a different character this time around.
The Romulan intelligence service, the Tal Shiar is a homage to the tal-shaya, a Vulcan martial arts move once used by Ambassador Sarek in TOS.
Toreth was going to be a man in the beginning. But this was also changed to make it a female-female conflict.
Worf's ponytail makes its debut here. Something he would keep for the remainder of the series, and when he moves to Deep Space Nine. 'Michael Dorn' wanted the change because he was tired of "looking like a Klingon who's just been to the beauty salon!"
