Episode Quotes
 | Season 6 / Episode 2: - Realm of Fear
Barclay: [working with O'Brien on the transporter] You know, maybe ignorance really is bliss. Chief Miles O'Brien: Sir? Barclay: Well, if I didn't know so much about these things, maybe they wouldn't scare me so much. |
 | Season 6 / Episode 2: - Realm of Fear
Barclay: The idea of being... deconstructed molecule by molecule, it's more than I can stand. Even when I was... a child, I always had a dreadful fear that, if ever I was dematerialized, that I would... never come back again whole. I know, sounds crazy, but... Counselor Deanna Troi: It's not crazy at all. You *are* being taken apart molecule by molecule. |

MISTAKES/GOOFS
- CONT: When Barclay goes to bed, the lights go out by themselves without him pushing a button or telling the computer to do so.
- CONT: When Captain Picard is speaking to the Admiral on the viewscreen in his ready room, she is wearing a Starfleet uniform but her insignia pin is missing. Also, when she and Picard have finished their conversation, their communications link turns off automatically, without either of them "closing the channel". Ordinarily with viewscreen communications on Star Trek, one party or the other touches a switch on his or her end to turn off the video link.
- FAIR: Barclay gives O'Brien an order in the transporter room. But O'Brien didn't have to follow it, because at that stage in the story, Barclay's been relieved of duty. However, it is possible that O'Brien isn't aware of it yet, seeing as it was a decision by the counselor.
- CHAR: When Barclay asks Geordi if he's ever experienced anything unusual when using the transporter, Geordi says "not really." Apparently, he has forgotten his experience four episodes earlier in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) {The Next Phase (#5.24)}, where a transporter anomaly effectively turned him and Ensign Ro into "ghosts" for the entire episode.
- CREW: Microphone visible for a few seconds above Data and Geordi setting up the plasma experiment in engineering.
TRIVIA
- The first Trek episode to show a transporter process from the transported's point of view.
- Barclay has no fear of spiders. In the Season 7 episode Genesis, Barclay de-evolves into a spider.
- Star Trek producer Brannon Braga really enjoyed writing this episode. He remarked: "Certainly it was one of my most personal episodes. People around here say I'm Barclay. I hate flying and that's where the idea came from. If I lived in the 24th Century, I'd be afraid to transport so I enjoyed exploring some of the deeper neuroses that Barclay had."
- In the final scene, Christina represents O'Brien's fear of spiders, and O'Brien (the transporter chief) is a literal representation of Barclay's fear of the transporter.
- The creatures seen in the transporter beam were designed by Dan Curry and built by modelmaker Carey Howe.
