Summary: Stardate: 43198.7 When on an away mission, crewman Marla Aster is killed by an ancient device. Then a non-corporeal life form indigenous to the planet, that can take human form, decides it must care for Aster’s son Jeremy, who is now an orphan, as it was their ancient weapon that killed his mother. The entity takes the form of the boy’s mother, Marla, and intends to take the boy down to the planet and raise him as his mother. However, the Enterprise crew intervenes, and tries to convince the entity that Jeremy’s interests would be better served by the boy staying with his own kind.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CHAR: Dr. Crusher declares Aster dead, but makes no effort at resuscitation or stabilization, even though the human brain can endure clinical death for up to three minutes (and other parts of the body for much longer).
PLOT: After being informed of his mother's death, Jeremy is left alone for much of the time. As captain of the ship, Picard has 'loco parentis' duty for the boy, but he ignores him.
CONT: Jeremy's arms during his final conversation with Worf, Picard, and the false mother.

TRIVIA

This episode marked the debut of writer Ronald D. Moore, who later rose to stardom as creator of the acclaimed, re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica" (2004).
