Summary: Riker must make a tough choice when he is offered the command of his own starship. His decision on whether to accept, or not, is hampered by the appearance of his father, with whom he detests and has been estranged from for a very long time. His father pushes Riker to take the command, but they must first hash out their underling bad feelings toward each other, before Riker can make his decision.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FACT: Wesley says "Breaking synchronous orbit,", but Enterprise is shown moving in a counter-rotational orbit. Synchronous orbit would mean the ship was moving in the same direction as the planet, and maintaining the same position over a specific land-mass.
PLOT: Picard and Riker are enamored that the first officer of the Aries can speak forty languages. But whenever they run into another language they simply use the Universal Translator program, and never ask their own staff for a translation. Such awe on their part makes no sense.

TRIVIA

The sport played between William and Kyle Riker is a fictional Japanese sport called anbo-jytsu.
Guest star John Tesh, one of the then hosts of "Entertainment Tonight" (1981), appeared as the Klingon K'Tesh in Worf's Ascension Chamber on the holodeck. His appearance was heavily featured in “Entertainment Tonight” at the time.
As all the Klingon costumes were being used for the concurrently shot Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), most of the Klingons are actually wearing boots from the old "Planet of the Apes" (1974) TV series.
The title refers to Icarus, son of Daedalus and is commonly known in Greek mythology for his attempt to escape Crete by flight, which ended in a fall to his death.
