Summary: Stardate: 41775.5 Capt. Picard is asked by an old Starfleet Captain friend to meet with him in secret. At this meeting with his friend, and with a few other officers, they tell Picard there is a possible problem within Starfleet command. Picard thinks they are overstating things, until he later learns his friend’s Starship has exploded for no apparent reason.Data is then tasked to look into any disturbing irregularities in recent Starfleet records, and after reviewing recent communiqués he finds several anomalies. Picard then decides to take Enterprise back to Earth to get some answers. In a twist, Starfleet command welcomes Enterprise’s return and invites Picard and Riker to a dinner in their honor.However, it is a trap. Picard knows it, but can he and Riker, who is to stay onboard to keep an eye on a visiting suspect Admiral, find a way to defeat the trap and save Starfleet and the Federation?

MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: If the cryogenic station was a 20th Century orbiter, there is no way it could have gotten into deep space.
FAKE: Riker orders Offenhouse removed from the bridge, but the security team is mesmerized by the Romulan ship. Not military discipline at all.
FAKE: Picard tells Offenhouse that the companels are strictly for ship's business. But in The Offspring, Dr. Crusher calls Wesley to remind him that he has a haircut appointment, which is hardly ship's business.
PLOT: Picard tells Offenhouse that money has no value in the 24th century, which means that the Federation is either communist or a giant welfare state which has a barter economy.

TRIVIA

The Hungarian dubbed version of this show (in the 1990s) changed Sonny's line about TV and baseball to "Is Dallas still on the air? I bet they're doing at least the 1000th episode," as local viewers weren't familiar enough with American baseball teams.
Is seen as a prelude to the Enterprise's encounter with the Borg, which is seen in the following season.
Last credit to Denise Crosby's character, Lt. Natasha Yar as a regular despite her demise in "Skin of Evil" three shows earlier.
The title refers to the Romulan Neutral Zone established between the Romulan Star Empire and the United Federation of Planets.
First appearance of the Romulan D'deridex-class warbirds. They would go on to make numerous appearances throughout this series, as well as on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993).
