Summary: Stardate: 41601.3 Troi, and her shuttle pilot, develop system problems on their shuttle on their return to Enterprise. They then crash on a planet where a malevolent creature lives. The creature, which seems to feed on the suffering of others, is able to prevent their rescue due to its strange powers.The Enterprise crew’s attempt to rescue Troi leads to the death of a valued crew member. The crew must then find a way around the creature’s powers and rescue Troi, the sole survivor of the shuttle crash, without losing any more of the crews’ lives.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: Jenice tells Picard she waited at the cafe; all day for him, and also says that it was raining that day. But when Picard recreates the café on the holodeck it is an open-air cafe, meaning that Jenice waited all day in the rain.
FACT: As noted in The Offspring, Data cannot use contractions. But when he drops the anti-matter in the time rift he says, "It's me!" Data also uses bad grammar - the line should read, "It is I!"

TRIVIA

This episode makes a mention to the Freighter Lalo as having experienced a Manheim time effect. A freighter of the same name also is mentioned in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) {The Best of Both Worlds: Part 1 (#3.26)}, as having made contact with the Borg cube and presumably destroyed.
The title is a quote from the movie Casablanca (1942).
