Summary: Stardate: 4129.5 Councilor Deanna Troi’s mother, Lwaxana, drops by for a surprise visit. Lwaxana has come to inform Deanna that the arranged marriage her father had set up for her while she was still a child, is about to occur. Although Deanna has known about the arrangement, she had just assumed the arrangement had been called off due to her career in Starfleet. Even though she has never met the groom, Deanna believes she has being seeing visions of him, so she agrees to acquiesce to this Betazoid tradition.However, the wedding plans are thrown into chaos when a major plaque ship approaches and threatens a world. Enterprise responds to the planet’s distress call, but soon both Enterprise and Deanna find that not all is as it appears to be with the plague and her groom.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CHAR: After Whalen is shot, Crusher cares for him for an extended period of time before covering him with a blanket. But a real doctor would know that the way to slow the onset of shock is to warm the patient immediately.
FAKE: When Picard enters the holodeck for the fist time we hear his voice making a personal log, but his lips aren't moving.

Written by Tracy Tormé, the story line is a homage to the film noir genre, mainly the movie 'The Maltese Falcon (1941)'. Cyrus Redblock was based on the character of "Kasper Gutman", played by Sydney Greenstreet, and Felix Leech was based on Peter Lorre (I)'s "Joel Cairo".
One of the headlines Captain Picard reads from the holodeck generated newspaper is "DiMaggio streak reaches 37." According to the Baseball Almanac, DiMaggio reached that number on June 25, 1941.
The title "The Big Goodbye" is a composite of the Raymond Chandler books "The Big Sleep" and "The Long Goodbye" featuring iconic detective Philip Marlowe.
