Summary: With the Enterprise destroyed, Archer and his crew decide to steal the Defiant and get out of the Tholian space station. The Tholian tries to trap them, but was no match for the advance technology of the Defiant. When Archer and his crew save an imperial ship of the Empire commanded by Admiral Black, Black wants Archer to surrender his ship to the Empire, but will give him another starship as soon as possible. But Archer doesn't want another ship, he wants the Defiant and will do anything that is neccessary to keep control of the ship and gain power in the Empire.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CONT: The Defiant fires on the Avenger, blowing a hole in the saucer section. Several seconds later, when the Avenger is shown in a close-up returning fire, the saucer section has no damage.

TRIVIA

This was the first time in "Star Trek" history that the sets from the original series had to be rebuilt from scratch. The sets included the bridge and the hallway sets, as well as the Jeffries tubes. On "The Next Generation" episode "Relics" much of the bridge set was filled in through computer animation with some parts rebuilt, and in the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Trials and Tribbleations", much of the old footage from "The Trouble With Tribbles" was used. The scene near the end of that episode, where Sisko is talking to Kirk on the bridge, came from "Mirror, Mirror" where he's talking to Marlena, the woman Kirk was with in that episode.
Whenever the Defiant's original (dead) crew are shown, their bodies are positioned identically to how they were shown in the original series episode "The Tholian Web".
When mirrors-Archer and Sato look up the United Federation of Planets in the USS Defiant's briefing room; the Terran Empire is revealed to be a centuries older establishment from Earth.
The Defiant's computer is voiced by Majel Barrett, making her the only actress to have appeared in every Star Trek series.
This episode takes place within the "Mirror Universe" from the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of the original "Star Trek" (1966). The cast play their mirror counterparts only, making this the first Star Trek episode to not feature any regular characters.
