Episode Quotes

Vulcan Captain: Live long and prosper.
[from Star Trek: First Contact]
Commander Jonathan Archer: You'll accept orders from me and me alone, is that clear?
MACO Sergeant Travis Mayweather: Yes, sir. And Captain, if I may? I'd like to be the first to congratulate you on a brilliant strategy. I'm certain that in years to come...
Commander Jonathan Archer: You already have the job, Sergeant. Don't talk yourself out of it.
Commander Charles 'Trip' Tucker III: [referring to the warp reactor] They say for every year you spend next to one of these things, you lose a decade of your life expectancy. Which means I'll probably be dead by the end of the week.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (continuity error): When we first meet the mirror T'Pol, she wears the rank insignia of full Commander. Then, in a subsequent scene with Archer, she has the rank of a Lieutenant Commander, but she was never shown as being demoted.
  • Goof (revealing mistake): During the opening title sequence, a ship is seen firing on a planet from orbit. The ship fires and doesn't travel very far before it impacts and detonates on the planet surface. It's as if the ship or orbiting only a couple of feet from the surface of the planet.

Trivia

  • It was during the shooting of this story that the cast was informed that Star Trek: Enterprise had been canceled.
  • Malcolm Reed was originally written as a Major in the (never seen) Starfleet Marine Corps. Also, plans had been made to include at least one Starfleet Marine in all 'away missions' but this was also dropped. However, in the 'evil' parallel universe of "In a Mirror Darkly", Reed did hold the rank of Starfleet Marine Major.
  • "In a Mirror, Darkly" takes place within the "Mirror Universe" first seen in "Star Trek" (1966) {Mirror, Mirror (#2.4)}. The cast play their mirror counterparts only, making this the first Star Trek episode to not feature any regular characters.
  • The opening title sequence of this two-parter features a different title music and some new footage depicting the history of Human warfare and interstellar domination of the Terran Empire. The original idea was to feature more episodes inside the Mirror Universe, so that this new title sequence could be reused, had Star Trek: Enterprise not been canceled.
  • The teaser features archive footage of Star Trek: First Contact. Additional footage of the first contact between humans and Vulcans in the Mirror Universe was shot on traditional film instead of with digital cameras, so that the new footage would blend in seamlessly.
