Summary: Six weeks into the Delphic Expanse, Captain Archer and his crew are still searching for clues regarding the mysterious Xindi. They're also adjusting to the newest members of the crew, a squad of Military Assault Command Operation soldiers (MACOs), led by Major Hayes. The crew learns of a Xindi working at a mining complex, and set out to track him down. Once they reach the complex, Archer and Reed head down to the grimy mine and meet with the alien Foreman. The Foreman offers a severed finger that he claims belongs to the Xindi worker. In exchange for a meeting with the worker, the Foreman demands a half liter of liquefied platinum. Back onboard, Phlox analyzes the finger and confirms that it is from a Xindi — however, it bears some intriguing variations from the Xindi corpse that was recovered on Earth. The corpse, Phlox explains, was reptilian. The finger is not.

Lieutenant Malcolm Reed: Because of our mission, sir.

Captain Jonathan Archer: So this state-of-the-art equipment was put in here to help us gather all the pieces of the puzzle. Figure out who's trying to destroy Earth.
Lieutenant Malcolm Reed: Right.
Captain Jonathan Archer: Six weeks. We've been in this Expanse for six weeks. What data have we gathered? What pieces of the puzzle have we started to put together? Not a single one. We don't have the luxury of being safe or cautious anymore. And if the only lead we can find comes from a freighter captain of questionable character, then that's good enough for me. Understood?

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FACT: Given the density of liquid platinum (19.77g/cm^3) the price for Archer's visit to the Xindi laborer weighed over 25 pounds and (at the cost of platinum in 2003, when the episode was filmed) worth over $190,000. Judging from the ease with which he was able to lift the container and wave it around, it seemed a lot lighter. Furthermore, the melting point of platinum is over 3,000°F, which would make a container of liquid platinum hot to hold.

TRIVIA

During the third season, for the first time since the original "Star Trek" (1966), a Trek series faced the real danger of cancellation by its network. But just as TOS was saved from cancellation, a massive letter-writing campaign by fans led to the show being renewed for a fourth season in May 2004 - with the head of UPN acknowledging that the campaign was instrumental in the decision to save the show from cancellation. Unfortunately the series was canceled following the fourth season. It is the only other Star Trek to be canceled in the middle of its run.
A villain is shown broadcasting a message to Enterprise. The prop used in this scene is a 1950s-vintage radio microphone.
Ben Browder was considered for the role of Major Hayes.
T'Pol's eyebrows change appearance between the second and third seasons, becoming more arched and Vulcan-like. In a 2004 interview with Femme Fatales magazine, Jolene Blalock revealed that she and her makeup artist unilaterally decided to sneak a change in T'Pol's eyebrows amongst the character's pre-third season hairstyle and costume alterations, and no one from the production office complained.
