Episode Quotes
Spock: There are many who are... uncomfortable with what we have created. It is almost a biological rebellion, a profound revulsion against the planned communities, the programming, the sterilized, artfully balanced atmospheres. They... hunger for an Eden where spring comes.
Scott: I don't know why a young mind has to be an undisciplined one. They're troublemakers!
Captain James T. Kirk: I used to get into a little trouble when I was that age, Scotty, didn't you?
Captain James T. Kirk: I used to get into a little trouble when I was that age, Scotty, didn't you?
Adam: [impromptly singing] Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy - I got a clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy.
[More Quotes]Mistakes/Goofs
- Goof (boom mic visible): As Captain Kirk walks away from Tongo Rad after they are transported aboard the shadow of the boom mic can be see on the back wall.
- Goof (revealing mistake): The sickbay scene in which the medical personnel pass out is an obvious re-use of the same footage from "Star Trek" (1966) {Spock's Brain (#3.1)}.
- Goof (revealing mistake): Two times, a shot of Kirk is reversed (presumably to make him face the right side of the screen) The first time he is facing Sulu in a corridor of the Enterprise, the second he is looking where Dr. Sevrin had just run on the planet Eden. Note the appearance of the Star Fleet emblem on the right side of his shirt, rather than the usual left side.
- Goof (revealing mistake): SPOILER: The space hippies received injuries from walking barefoot on the corrosive soil of Eden. When Kirk and company rescue them, they take them out of the shuttlecraft - onto that same soil. Since they are still barefoot, this act is illogical - the safest place for them to be would be in the shuttlecraft.
- Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): As Adam plays his guitar-like instrument during his first song, his strumming of the strings does not match the music, mainly during his first song.
Trivia
- The egg shaped badges with what appears to be a sideways figure "8" which the space hippies wear is actually a representation of the symbol for "infinity."
- The space hippie protest "Herbert, Herbert, Herbert!" is a gag, referring to both Star Trek four time director Herb Wallerstein, and long time Executive in Charge of Production Herbert F. Solow. (Spock tells Kirk that the reference to Herbert is "somewhat uncomplimentary" and that "Herbert was a minor official, notorious for his rigid and limited patterns of thought.")
- This episode was originally entitled "Joanna." The character of Irina was originally to be Joanna McCoy, daughter of Dr. McCoy, and love interest for Captain Kirk, but that original script was rejected. The character of Joanna was planned to later appear in the fourth season, but Star Trek: The Original Series was canceled at the end of the third season.
- In this episode, for the first time, Chekov's first and middle names are spoken/revealed, Pavel Andreivich.
