Summary: The Enterprise is investigating the distress call of the Earth colony Beta 12A. When they arrive, they find that all 100 men, women, and children are nowhere to be found. Kirk's suspicion of Klingon foul play is confirmed when a Klingon Battlecruiser approaches and accuses the Enterprise of the murder of 400 of their crewman. Kirk is forced to act fast as the Klingons get the early upper hand.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CONT: Just before Chekov forces a kiss on Mara, we see in the close-up shots of her that she is wearing lipstick. Kirk and Spock then arrive and intervene, and in the cutaway shots of Mara during Kirk's subsequent speech, the lipstick is gone. Then Kirk has Spock take her, and as she and Spock exit frame, we see she's wearing lipstick again.

TRIVIA

This was the only televised episode with a female Klingon.
Mark Tobin, who plays a Klingon in this episode, would return more than 30 years later to play a Klingon in "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995) {Barge of the Dead (#6.3)}. He previously played Khan's right-hand man, Joaquin, in "Star Trek" (1966) {Space Seed (#1.22)}.
In the original script, when the alien leaves the ship, Kang compliments Kirk by telling him that he is worthy of being a Klingon.
As in the Starfleet of the Mirror Universe, this universe's Klingon Empire used agonizers (on Ensign Chekov). These are later painsticks on "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
This episode was originally written with John Colicos Kor as Kirk's Klingon adversary. Mr. Colicos was in Europe making a movie, and was unavailable (he really wanted to do this episode). The part was recast with Michael Ansara as "Kang".
