Summary: Spock, Bones, and Kirk beam down to a planet whose inhabitants are far less technologically evolved. However, they realize that some of the planet's inhabitants are armed far beyond their natural capabilities and think that the Klingons may have gone behind the Federation's back and ignored the treaty about neutral planets.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CREW: Nimoy's double is visible when Spock is shot by the Klingon-style flintlock.
CONT: At the beginning, McCoy's equipment changes position relative to his feet as he, Kirk and Spock beam up to the ship.
CONT: After Spock is shot and they rendezvous with McCoy and beam out, there is an error in the 'optical.' Not all of the equipment 'sparkles' with the beam out - one piece just dissolves, clearly missed by the technicians in post-production.
CONT: The ape-like creature is referred to throughout as a "Mugato". However, in the closing credits, actor/stuntman Janos Prohaska (who played the creature) is credited as "The Gumato" (see Trivia section).

TRIVIA

The mugato was designed by Janos Prohaska, who had also created the Horta for "Star Trek" (1966) {The Devil in the Dark (#1.25)}.
The Mugato was called The Gumato in the original script. But DeForest Kelley kept mispronouncing it so it was changed. The closing credits still name the creature as The Gumato.
Janos Prohaska owned the ape suit, having acquired it from a previous film project.
Neural was the name in the script for Tyree's planet.
