Summary: Kirk and a landing party beam down to examine tritantium deposits and are attacked by a gaseous creature that feeds on red blood cells. Kirk remembers the creature as one that he fought---and failed to destroy---earlier in his career and where his mistake killed half the crew. Now the creature is stalking the Enterprise and Kirk is determined to destroy it no matter what the cost.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: In the first scene, Spock phasers off a sample of rock. You can see the piece that will fall off before he fires.
PLOT: Throughout the entire episode, Scotty is trying to convince Kirk that they have to leave to get the medication to the Yorktown. Could they not simply ask the Yorktown to either meet them half way or come to them?
FAKE: Captain Kirk and Ensign Garrovick are fighting on the planet. When they are up against the rock wall, the entire rockface moves.
CONT: Also during the fight between Captain Kirk and Ensign Garrovick, both men roll around on the ground, and their clothes - especially their pants - become quite dusty. Seconds later, a quick cut to a shot of the cloud approaching the standing men reveals no dust on their clothes, and when they beam aboard the ship moments later, their clothes are clean and dust free.
CONT: Near the end of the show, Kirk and the ensign get into a brief fistfight on the planet, and when the fight's over, Kirk's hair is all messed up. Almost immediately after that, the two characters beam up to the ship, and at this point Kirk's hair has been freshly combed.
