MISTAKES/GOOFS
- CHAR: At the beginning of this episode, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are standing on ceremony in the transporter room to welcome Sarek, the Vulcan ambassador, and his human wife. After they've been received, Kirk invites Spock to take a few hours to beam down to Vulcan and visit his parents. To Kirk's visible astonishment, Spock replies, "Ambassador Sarek and his wife ARE my parents". Surely Captain Kirk would already have enough information about his second-in-command to know who his parents were!
- CONT: Gav (the Tellarite ambassador) is sitting at a table holding a drink which repeatedly switches hands between shots.
- CONT: During the surgery on Sarek while the Enterprise is under attack, after Spock has been sedated, he lifts his head during one of the 'shaking' scenes and then lowers it back down.
- CONT: Kirk gets attacked by a knife-wielding Andorran. During the fight, the knife gets knocked out of the Andorran's hand and it falls on the ground to his left. There is a quick change in camera angle and the Andorran is now holding the knife in his right hand.
TRIVIA
- In the first episode ever to feature Spock's parents, actors Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt (I) asked Leonard Nimoy for advice on how the two of them could display their affection for one another in a subtle way since the Vulcans are without emotion since it was Nimoy who had created the Vulcan Neck Pinch and the Vulcan Salute. Nimoy suggested that they touch and stroke each others hands by the index and middle finger.
- In the original draft script, there was a banquet scene featuring the three main diplomats: Sarek (the Vulcan), Shras (the Andorian), and Gav (the old Tellerian). When this scene was scrapped, the dialog was inserted into the final version of the buffet scene. Other dialog was scrapped that would have indicated that Sarek was an engineer before he became a diplomat, and that he was the son of the famous Vulcan diplomat Shaleris.
- This show features the appearance of Thelev, the first male Orion.
- The reason Andorians cock their heads is for better visual acuity. According to Star Trek lore, the Andorian antennae interpret light beyond the normal human spectrum. Thus, Andorian vision is literally quadroscopic.
