Summary: A landing party beams down to Pyrus 7 to survey the surface. The Enterprise loses contact with them, then gets a message from one crewman, Jackson, asking to be beamed up. When they do, he's found frozen dead and a voice speaking through him tells them to leave. Refusing to abandon Sulu and Scotty, Kirk, McCoy, and Spock beam down to encounter witches, castles, a black cat, a warlock, and a sorceress, all determined to have them leave.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: When Sylvia and Korob appear in their "natural forms," the wires animating the puppets are clearly visible. (Corrected in the Remastered Edition)
FAKE: The skeleton next to McCoy in the dungeon has a seam on its skull where it had been sawn open. This seam is typical for medical skeletons.
CONT: The black cat is a short hair in some shots and a long hair in others.
CONT: When Kirk goes back for the transmuter Scotty's position changes from when he was rendered unconscious by Spock a few moments earlier.
FAKE: When Kirk fights McCoy, McCoy's weapon falls to the ground and bounces showing itself to be made of rubber.

TRIVIA

Korob and Sylvia refer to their leaders as the Old Ones, and imply that they're close by. Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft referred to the inhuman gods in his short stories as Old Ones; their being "nearby" was standard fare in his writings.
First appearance of Pavel Chekov, though not the first one broadcast. Notice that Walter Koenig (I) was still growing his hair out and therefore had to wear a rather unconvincing wig.
First episode produced for the second season.
The alien voices of the revealed forms of Sylvia and Korob are actually the sounds made by newly-hatched alligators calling for their mother.
James Doohan (Scotty) lost his right middle finger during WWII. Most of his scenes are shot to hide it; however, it is very noticeable in the episode "Catspaw." When Scotty is holding a phaser pistol on Kirk & Spock, only two fingers are holding the butt of the phaser.
