Summary: The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the planet Mulour, only to find the entire civilization has been destroyed. Then a small probe with incredible weaponry and defense capabilities attacks the Enterprise. After Kirk identifies himself, it agrees to be beamed aboard to make contact. The probe, Nomad, was sent out to explore the far ends of the galaxy, but it has altered and is now dedicated to seeking out and sterilizing life forms. Only the fact that it believes Kirk is its creator is keeping it from destroying the Enterprise... and it starts to see through the deception.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

MISC: When Spock, Kirk and McCoy view a diagram that shows the various parts of the NOMAD probe, an obvious spelling error is seen on the diagram. The lower right of the diagram contains the annotation: "Computer Data Banks Recall & Transmition". The word "Transmition" should read "Transmission".
CONT: When Nomad is supposedly emerging from sickbay after attacking Chapel to see Kirk's records, he is instead seen emerging from the Turbolift.
FAKE: During Nomad's initial attack on the Enterprise, the bridge crew react to the "hit" so violently that the helm/navigation console is lifted clear off the ground and almost tipped over.

TRIVIA

Nomad was launched from Earth in 2002.
When the Enterprise crew view biographical data on the scientist Jackson Roykirk, the man shown on screen is actually director Marc Daniels.
The story implied that Nomad was Earth's first probe out of our solar system. In actual fact, Pioneer 10 was the first craft to reach interstellar space.
The alien probe that Nomad collided with was called Tan Ru.
