Summary: Colonists on a distant planet are taken over by alien organisms that control their hosts by inflicting pain. Things take a turn for the worse when Spock is infected by one of the organisms and even his Vulcan ability to control pain isn't sufficient to resist them. The Enterprise crew must come up with a means of destroying the organisms without killing their human hosts.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: After the crew's nearly disastrous experience on "Miri", their lack of concern about first beaming down without protective clothing and then beaming back up with Kirk's Nephew and Sister-in-Law (both obviously sick) seems odd.
DATE: Starting at 7:55, note the old fashioned "Ice Cube Tray" Overhead Fluorescent Lights (common in the 1950's and 1960's) inside the Building.

TRIVIA

There is an outtake on the Star Trek Blooper Reel showing the alien parasite attaching itself to Spock's buttocks by mistake.
The shooting location for the Denoba Colony was: One Space Park, Redondo Beach, CA 90278. It was the former home of the aerospace division of the now-defunct TRW. This is where the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) system was developed by Gerald J. Bransford Sr. and his team.
The actual building where Spock is attacked by the parasite is now a cafeteria belonging to Lockheed-Martin Corporation.
The dead body of Sam Kirk (Captain Kirk's brother) was 'played' by William Shatner, with added mustache and age makeup.
At the end of this episode, Spock reveals that the brightness of the Vulcan sun has caused Vulcans to evolve a protective third, inner "eyelid". The proper name for this tissue, which is present in cats and some other animals, is the nictitating membrane.
