Summary: Dr. McCoy receives an accidental overdose of a powerful medication and becomes dangerously paranoid. He escapes into Earth's past and there changes history in a way that prevents the Federation from ever having existed! Kirk and Spock must follow their deranged friend into the past to rescue him and set right whatever McCoy changed, or they will be stranded in the past forever.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

PLOT: The past was changed, along with the present, there is no Enterprise, yet the landing party still exists and remembers their version of the time-line.
FAKE: When the landing party is preparing to be beamed back up to Enterprise, James Doohan ("Scotty") can be seen looking down in order to locate the mark indicating where he is supposed to stand for the transport scene.
CONT: Spock knows Edith must die because he saw her obituary. However, when Kirk asks when she will die, he says he has no way of knowing when she will die. He repeats this after Edith almost falls on the stairs.
PLOT: When McCoy stumbles up to Edith; Spock turns around seconds later, behind them, serving in the kitchen. As a Vulcan, Spock's sharp senses would have heard his voice out of everyone else in the mission.
PLOT: SPOILER: It is not revealed how Kirk, Spock and Bones return to their present without a portal.

TRIVIA

When William Shatner and Joan Collins are walking together on the street, they pass in front of a shop with the name Floyd's Barber Shop clearly painted on the window. This is the same Floyd's Barber Shop that is often seen on "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960), adjacent to the sheriff's office, in the town of Mayberry.
The only time that Kirk utters an expletive.
Keeler tells McCoy his blue uniform hardly looks like it's from the U.S. Navy. DeForest Kelley filmed naval training videos in real life.
In Harlan Ellison's original story, Kirk and Spock are aided in the 1930's by a vagrant who reveals himself to be a veteran of the Battle of the Somme.
When Kirk gazes upwards, the star pattern changes. This was mistaken as an error before the fade-out of Act One. The starscape effect was to visualize for audiences that no starships (at least from Starfleet) exist in the present.
