Summary: War breaks out between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Spock and Kirk are sent to establish a treaty with the residents of the planet Organia, which occupies a key strategic position. The Organians are complete pacifists who reject Kirk's diplomatic overtures, saying simply that the officers do not understand them. Then the Klingons arrive and take Organians hostage to force them to obey, and Kirk and Spock must work undercover to defeat them, even as the Organians' total disinclination to defend themselves disgusts the Federation officers. Both fleets move to engage in space above Organia, as the officers on the ground below prepare to do the same. And then something happens that changes everything...

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: When Kirk is tossed into the cell and hits the "stone" floor, it's obviously a mat (to cushion the actor's fall).
PLOT: If the Organians made all of the weapons unusable (everywhere in the universe seems to be implied) how did the Enterprise or the Klingons fight or fire any weapons in future episodes?
PLOT: Near the end, when everyone is "superheated," the Klingon commander at one point advances towards the Organians and Kirk stops him clearly touching the Klingon. If they were super-heated, Kirk would have burned himself doing this. Throughout this sequence, no one suffers any burns even though everything is so hot.

TRIVIA

The Klingon mind sifter in this episode, along with the neuralizer from "Dagger of the Mind" were both from the interrogation technology Andorians used on Vulcan prisoners on "Enterprise".
Introduces the Klingon Empire. Klingons were named after Gene Roddenberry's friend, Bob Clingan.
The Klingon Lieutenant played by Victor Lundin is the first Klingon to appear in the original series.
