Summary: The Enterprise is sent to evacuate a colony which should be dead due to radiation exposure. But the colonists are alive and well and oddly sedate. When Kirk tries to evacuate them, they refuse, and Spock soon discovers that the colonists are under the effects of spores that makes them curiously sedate... and heal any injuries. The Enterprise crew is "infected" as well, and Kirk soon finds himself stranded in Paradise.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: Obvious stunt doubles for Kirk and Spock as they fight in the transporter room.
CONT: At one point, Kirk throws a plant on the floor just in front of the navigator's console. Later, when he returns to the empty ship, a wide angle view of the bridge shows that the plant is no longer there. Then, a few moments later, as he is making his log entry and sits at the navigator's console, the plant reappears and sprays him with spores.

TRIVIA

Leonard Nimoy has stated that Charles Bronson was on set during his love scenes with Jill Ireland (who was his wife), to "keep an eye on her." This made Leonard Nimoy nervous whenever he had to kiss Jill Ireland. Their scenes were filmed at Bronson Canyon, CA.
In Jerry Sohl's original draft (first titled "Power Play," then "The Way of The Spores"), it was Lt. Sulu who was infected by the spores and was able to fall in love with Leila. Displeased with D.C. Fontana's rewrite, Sohl was credited under the pseudonym Nathan Butler.
The title refers to 'This Side of Paradise' the debut novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Many fans have noted that this planet would have been perfect for the agrarian-minded hippies in "Star Trek" (1966) {The Way to Eden (#3.20)}.
