Summary: The Enterprise encounters the SS Botany Bay. She has been in space for centuries, carrying seventy two men and women in suspended animation. Kirk and Spock realize these people are dangerous refugees from Earth's last great war. The result of selective breeding and genetic engineering, these men and women possess superior power and skill... and superior ambition that drives their plans for the modern era. They awaken the group's leader, Khan Noonien Singh, but he quickly takes over the Enterprise and plans to lead a new war of conquest in the 23rd century.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CONT: As Khan wakes up, he asks Kirk how long he's been asleep. Kirk answers "two centuries." An answer of "three centuries" would have been much closer to accurate. Kirk would have known that Khan left Earth in the late 20th Century. The original Star Trek series was taking place nearly 300 years later.
CREW: As Khan hides behind a wall in engineering just before Kirk enters, someone walks in front of a stage light and the shadow of his head passes across the floor.
CONT: Although Lt. Kyle (wearing a blue tunic) is operating the transporter device when the team (including Scotty) beams to the Botany Bay, stock footage of James Doohan's hands and red sleeves (with Lt. Commander rank stripes) are seen in the close-up shot.
FAKE: William Shatner (Kirk) accidentally knocks his phaser off while smashing the glass on Khan's hibernation unit. DeForest Kelley (McCoy) notices and tries to reach it, but a few moments later (possibly for an instruction of the director) he avoids it and turns back to the others.
CONT: Marla McGivers is addressed as "Lieutenant", but her tunic has the braidless sleeves of an Ensign.

TRIVIA

In the original script, the Botany Bay's log stated that the ship was originally headed for the Tau Ceti star system. Examination of the ship reveals a damaged steering system, which has sent the Botany Bay careening off-course into deep space.
The events of this episode were the basis for Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982).
In one early draft, Khan was named Thornwald; in another, he was named Ericcson.
In the original story Khan's ship was just one of many deportations of war criminals in Earth's history. This explains the ship name "Botany Bay", which was the site of a real penal colony near modern Sydney, Australia.
The Botany Bay model was later recycled as an ore freighter in "Star Trek" (1966) {The Ultimate Computer (#2.24)}.
