Summary: The crew is captured by Trelane, the Squire of Gothos, who has styled himself and his dwelling on his ouit-of-date observations of Earth. Trelane has almost unlimited power and decides to make the crew his playthings, and Kirk must challenge him so they can make their escape.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: When Trelane is playing with the phaser, the salt monster from The Man Trap can clearly be seen in one corner of the room.
CHAR: Trelane and Uhura both play the harpsichord. However, the landing party figures out from its surroundings that Trelane has learned about Earth only from what he can see ("food without taste" and "fire without heat") and about things that happened in Earth's past. Since the radio did not exist in Napoleonic times and light travels substantially faster than sound, Trelane should not have known what a harpsichord sounds like.
DATE: Trelane makes references to Napoleon and Alexander Hamilton, both of whom lived well after the point in time where he is said to be viewing Earth (900 years previous).
CONT: When Spock asks Kirk for an estimate of the range of Trelane's powers, Kirk replies, "We can take an educated guess... at the point we first entered their solar system." But at the beginning of the episode, the planet Gothos appeared out of nowhere, in the middle of a "stellar desert" - no mention of a sun or other planets.

TRIVIA

In his book, Q-Squared, author Peter David (I) related that Trelane was an adolescent Q entity.
William Campbell (I), who plays Trelane, would later play a different character in the second season classic, "The Trouble with Tribbles".
Trelane says to Kirk, of Uhura: "Ah, a Nubian prize. Taken on one of your raids of conquest, no doubt." During filming, William Campbell (I) blew the line with the embarrassing blooper, "Ah, a Nubian slave!" According to Campbell, Nichelle Nichols responded, "I'll kick you in the ankle!"
The salt monster from "Star Trek" (1966) {The Man Trap (#1.1)} can be seen in one corner of Trelane's castle.
William Campbell has said that the part of Trelane was really written for Roddy McDowall. The reason why it was eventually decided not to use him was that it was feared that the mannerisms of the character combined with McDowall's look would make the character appear gay. Campbell was chosen because his huskier look/build would offset the foppish mannerisms of the character.
