MISTAKES/GOOFS
- PLOT: Kirk and Mendez follow the Enterprise in a presumably warp-capable shuttle after Spock commandeers the Enterprise. They run out of fuel, and "coast". Quite some time later, Spock has the Enterprise stop, tractor in the shuttle, and transport Kirk aboard. However, they should be far out of range to use those devices.
- CHAR: On the surface of Talos IV, Pike and Spock investigate a blue-leafed plant that produces an eerie wailing chorus as the breeze blows. They pinch a few leaves, and a few voices of the chorus are muted. Spock then smiles. However, Vulcans wouldn't smile at such a trivial thing.
- CONT: Immediately after Captain Pike is abducted by the Talosians, remaining crew members fire at what they believe at the time is the door to the elevator which appeared to be the form of transport used to take the Captain. They fire three phaser barrages at the "door," and in all three cases the exact same thing happens: particles of the portal are blasted out, and the entryway is damaged but in perfectly identical fashion.
- PLOT: Just before their first visit with the injured Capt. Pike, Commodore Mendez asks Kirk if he knows Pike. He then states that Pike was about Kirk's age. However, the plot of the episode is about an incident that happened 13 years before, when Spock was Capt. Pike's science officer. This would make Pike a 21-year-old starship captain.
- CHAR: Upon placing himself under arrest, Spock turns command over to Lt. Hansen, the helmsman. However, Mr. Scott, the accepted third in command, is on board the ship and therefore should assume command. Moreover, Hansen meets Kirk when Kirk is beamed aboard - if he can command the ship while not actually on the bridge, why can't Scotty?
TRIVIA
- The only 2-parter in the Star Trek canon.
- Malachi Throne provided the voice of the Talosian Keeper in the first pilot "The Cage", which was also Leonard Nimoy's first "Star Trek" appearance. Throne was also with Nimoy for his final "Star Trek" appearance, the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) Season Five episode "Unification Part II".
- It would seem that the nation of Cuba still exists in the 23rd Century. In "The Menagerie: Part 1" from Season 1, during the court-martial scene, if you look carefully, you can see a flag stand in the back of the room, and looking at the flag hanging on it, you can make out the blue stripes and red triangle, which are part of the Cuban flag.
- Although scenes from the original pilot were used in this story that featured Jeffrey Hunter (I) as Captain Christopher Pike, he was unavailable and unaffordable for the framing story into which the scene were inserted. Sean Kenney (I), an actor who resembles Hunter, was used instead. He plays the mute, crippled Captain Pike, now wheelchair-bound after an accident.
- The events of "The Cage" occured 13 years before "The Menagerie".
