Summary: While exploring an unknown sector of space, the Enterprise encounters a gigantic spaceship that immobilizes the Federation starship and threatens to destroy it. With minutes ticking away to destruction, Kirk must attempt to bluff the enemy into letting them go before time runs out.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CONT: When Kirk leaves sickbay, he throws his uniform shirt over his shoulders; the tunic has only two solid gold rank stripes. In the turbo lift and changing in his quarters, his tunic has the 2½ stripe marking.
CONT: As Sulu watches the countdown timer it drops from 2:01 to 2:00 to 1:59, at which point Sulu says "We have one minute".
CONT: Sulu hears Kyle say, "They now have one minute." Then he looks up toward the screen and then back down toward his console. He is responding to a line of dialog from the alien Balok ("You now have one minute!"), voiced by the late Ted Cassidy. However, the audio of Ted Cassidy saying "one minute!" appears in the preview trailer (shown on the VHS and DVD's) pointing to the possibility that the line of audio was somehow lost between the people doing the preview trailer and the people doing the actual sound editing for the episode.

TRIVIA

This episode contains one of the few instances in the series of Lt. Uhura wearing a gold "command" type uniform, instead of her usual red.
Balok's "Tranya" drink was also asked for by the Odo-Curzon combination during the episode _"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993) {Facets (#3.25)})_.
This is the earliest episode of the main series (excluding the two pilots) to be filmed.
The antagonist's "real" form is played by Clint Howard. At the time, Clint's brother Ron Howard (I) was starring in another hit Desilu series, "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960).
