Episode Quotes
 | Season 1 / Episode 8: - Miri
Dr. McCoy: It's dead. It's incredible. Capt. Kirk: What is? Dr. McCoy: It's metabolic rate. It's impossibly high, as if it burning itself up. Almost as if it aged a century in just the past few minutes. |
 | Season 1 / Episode 8: - Miri
Yeoman Rand: Miri... she really loved you, you know? Capt. Kirk: Yes. [pause] I never get involved with older women, Yeoman. |

MISTAKES/GOOFS
- FAKE: Notice the lit Bunsen Burner (at 37:10). How could the Gas Main still be going after 300 Years? Bunsen Burners weren't used in the labs on the Enterprise, so this couldn't have been something they brought down with them.
- FAKE: In the opening scene, where the ENTERPRISE orbits Miri's planet, you can see the hole at the top of the globe used for the original version of the scene where it would have been attached to its stand. This has been replaced in the remastered version with a digital shot of that same planet.
- CHAR: At the end of the episode, Captain Kirk tells Mr. Spock, "Full ahead, warp factor one" which Spock repeats back to him, however, Mr. Spock is sitting at the science station (his normal station) and not at the helm, which is where the ship's movements are controlled. (The real world explanation, of course, is that giving the extra at the helm station a line would have meant paying him more money.)
- PLOT: Given that the Captain's Log stated that the SOS Transmitter was found in the same building as the Lab, why couldn't someone (probably Mr. Spock) have used this to signal the Enterprise to beam down some more Communicators, thus solving their dilemma? He made a Computer out of local items from an even earlier time period in "The City on the Edge of Forever". Also, when the children steal the communicators, they only get three - presumably those belonging to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Rand and the two security guards are not present, and therefore probably have their communicators with them - it is highly unlikely Kirk would let them go off into unknown territory without standard equipment.
- CONT: (At 26:11), Kirk's shirt is badly soiled from his combat with "Louise", but when he shoots his phaser at her (at 26:14), he is shown wearing a clean shirt.
TRIVIA
- The cast of children included the offspring of William Shatner, Gene Roddenberry and Greg Morris (I) ("Mission: Impossible" (1966) was also filmed on the Desilu lot).
- Although all the children on the planet die when they reach puberty, Michael J. Pollard, who played Jahn, was 27 years old when this episode aired, and Kim Darby (I), who played Miri, was 19.
- When Kirk rushes into the lab with his recently-returned communicator he is holding a little girl in one hand. That is his daughter, Melanie.
- The exterior sets on the duplicate of Earth were shot on redressed sets from "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960).
- This didn't receive its first UK TV showing until the 1990s, despite the show being frequently repeated. This was down to the BBC feeling that the episode contained some very dark themes, much too unsuitable for the show's early evening transmission.
